Doug Lamborn, Lawyer, has violated Copyright Laws with his campaign ads

Doug Lamborn is a lawyer.

His campaign has used Project Vote-Smart Copyrighted voting information against their will:

Doug Lamborn, a candidate for the 5th Congressional District in Colorado, has attacked his opponent, Jay Fawcett, with misleading information and used Project Vote Smart's name to give his accusations credibility.

The Project prohibits the use of its name and programs, including the National Political Awareness Test (NPAT), in partisan political advertising.

All candidates in Colorado have been notified of this policy in writing.

Additionally, this policy is posted prominently on the Project Vote Smart website.

All the information on The Project's website is Copyrighted.

President Bush: "The only way we can win is if we leave before the job is done."

He said it: "The only way we can win is if we leave before the job is done."

I, for one, believe him.

Rumsfeld Must Go!

It is a national wave. Jay Fawcett has already called for Rummy's resignation, on DailyKos no less. (Take that, Doug Lamborn, he of NO MILITARY SERVICE).

Now the Army/Navy/Air Force/Marine Times does the same:. Will Chimpy McStubborn listen to the will of the people?

Time for Rumsfeld to go

"So long as our government requires the backing of an aroused and informed public opinion ... it is necessary to tell the hard bruising truth."

That statement was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Marguerite Higgins more than a half-century ago during the Korean War.

But until recently, the "hard bruising" truth about the Iraq war has been difficult to come by from leaders in Washington. One rosy reassurance after another has been handed down by President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld: "mission accomplished," the insurgency is "in its last throes," and "back off," we know what we're doing, are a few choice examples.

Military leaders generally toed the line, although a few retired generals eventually spoke out from the safety of the sidelines, inciting criticism equally from anti-war types, who thought they should have spoken out while still in uniform, and pro-war foes, who thought the generals should have kept their critiques behind closed doors.

Now, however, a new chorus of criticism is beginning to resonate. Active-duty military leaders are starting to voice misgivings about the war's planning, execution and dimming prospects for success.

Army Gen. John Abizaid, chief of U.S. Central Command, told a Senate Armed Services Committee in September: "I believe that the sectarian violence is probably as bad as I've seen it ... and that if not stopped, it is possible that Iraq could move towards civil war."

Last week, someone leaked to The New York Times a Central Command briefing slide showing an assessment that the civil conflict in Iraq now borders on "critical" and has been sliding toward "chaos" for most of the past year. The strategy in Iraq has been to train an Iraqi army and police force that could gradually take over for U.S. troops in providing for the security of their new government and their nation.

But despite the best efforts of American trainers, the problem of molding a viciously sectarian population into anything resembling a force for national unity has become a losing proposition.

For two years, American sergeants, captains and majors training the Iraqis have told their bosses that Iraqi troops have no sense of national identity, are only in it for the money, don't show up for duty and cannot sustain themselves.

Meanwhile, colonels and generals have asked their bosses for more troops. Service chiefs have asked for more money.

And all along, Rumsfeld has assured us that things are well in hand.

Now, the president says he'll stick with Rumsfeld for the balance of his term in the White House.

This is a mistake.

It is one thing for the majority of Americans to think Rumsfeld has failed. But when the nation's current military leaders start to break publicly with their defense secretary, then it is clear that he is losing control of the institution he ostensibly leads.

These officers have been loyal public promoters of a war policy many privately feared would fail. They have kept their counsel private, adhering to more than two centuries of American tradition of subordination of the military to civilian authority.

And although that tradition, and the officers' deep sense of honor, prevent them from saying this publicly, more and more of them believe it.

Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large. His strategy has failed, and his ability to lead is compromised. And although the blame for our failures in Iraq rests with the secretary, it will be the troops who bear its brunt.

This is not about the midterm elections. Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth:

Donald Rumsfeld must go.

IRAQ - Still Issue # 1

IRAQ is still the most important issue in this campaign.

There are many others that have come and gone, many others the pros tried to play up or ignore - but the deaths of our troops, the incredibly poor non-existent planning, the politicization of every event for electoral gain, the lo$t billion$, the ruined military readiness, the shredding of our Constitution and the enmity of the world are all a result of the President's childish and irresponsible urge to "f*** Saddam, we're taking him out."

Just from today's headlines:

President Bush and Vice-President Cheney will be in our state today and tomorrow to proclaim their success and to mock our patriotism. They will call us cowards and traitors. They will say we shouldn't even have the right to vote.

Dummy Bob and Mike Rosen and Joseph Michelli and the Professional Liars' Army of the Party of Hate and Hypocrisy will take to the air to spew their last drops of venom before you vote.

It will take 50 years to clean up the mess made of our nation's finances, our national security, and our civil rights. And they will blame us every step of the way.

This vote counts more than ever, and for those who think married gays or meth-sniffing hypocrites or undocumented workers are what threatens this nation, ask yourself this: what Karl Rove want you to be worried about this election...and go 180º from there.

The Toll of Torture

Dick Cheney should be ashamed to show his face-shooting face in this town:

Flagstaff soldier killed self in protest

A Flagstaff soldier who died in Iraq committed suicide after she refused to participate in interrogation techniques being practiced by her U.S. Army intelligence unit, according to a report about an Army investigation aired by a Flagstaff radio station.

U.S. Army Spc. Alyssa R. Peterson, 27, died Sept. 15, 2003, in Tel Afar, an Iraqi city of about 350,000 residents in the northern part of the country.

At the time, the U.S. Department of Defense listed her cause of death as a "noncombat weapons discharge."

Dick Cheney is a disgustin inhuman fat pig who could not care one whit about our soldiers. It is proven every day.

Those that will sit here today and applaud him and give him money are worse than any pole-smoking, crack-sniffing hypocritical Christian in our midst.

Let he who is without sin

Dear New Lifers and friends of New Life Church,

Many of you have expressed concern about today's news regarding our pastor. Thank you all for your prayers and support, and for your concern for our church family.

As you've likely heard by now, Pastor Ted has voluntarily placed himself on administrative leave as New Life's senior pastor to allow our external board of overseers to work effectively. Below is the statement that we released to the media on Thursday afternoon.

Since that time, the board of overseers has met with Pastor Ted. It is important for you to know that he confessed to the overseers that some of the accusations against him are true. He has willingly and humbly submitted to the authority of the board of overseers, and will remain on administrative leave during the course of the investigation.

I am serving as the acting senior pastor of New Life Church. I met with the pastoral staff and elders Thursday night, and I assure you that the leadership team is strong and united. We remain resolute in our commitment to serving New Life Church and the people of our community.

Please continue to keep Ted and Gayle and their family in your prayers.

I love serving God with you all,

Ross Parsley

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From New Life Church
Colorado Springs, Colorado

Rev. Ted Haggard, Senior Pastor of New Life Church, stated today that he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations made on Denver talk radio this morning." He, therefore, placed himself on administrative leave, pending investigation, spiritual counsel, and a decision by the church's board of overseers. Pastor Haggard said, "I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity. I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual advice and guidance."

"If you use any of this I'll sue you."

Christian love and understanding, baby!

Clueless James Dobson

Kinda like "Shoeless" Joe Jackson:
Focus on the Family founder and Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today addressing an allegation by a male prostitute in Denver that Ted Haggard was one of his clients:

"It is unconscionable that the legitimate news media would report a rumor like this based on nothing but one man's accusation. Ted Haggard is a friend of mine and it appears someone is trying to damage his reputation as a way of influencing the outcome of Tuesday's election -- especially the vote on Colorado's marriage-protection amendment -- which Ted strongly supports.

No wonder he supports it, he knew how threatened his own marriage was. - Z

"He has shown a great deal of grace under these unfortunate circumstances, quickly turning this matter over to his church for an independent investigation. That is a testament to the character I have seen him exhibit over and over again through the years."
Haggard stepping down amid gay affair inquiry:
The leader of one of Colorado's most popular mega-churches, Ted Haggard, is temporarily stepping down from his leadership role, after allegations from a male prostitute that Haggard solicited gay sex.

Haggard, the founder and senior leader of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs and president of the multimillion- member National Association of Evangelicals, denied the accusations raised by the prostitute on Wednesday.

Today, a press conference by church leaders to support Haggard was cancelled shortly before it was scheduled to take place.
What is Dobson's Ph.D. in, Stupid?

CSI: Denver

DownWithTyranny gives his take on Ted Haggard's possible gay sex and crystal meth adventures in carnal knowledge -- Denver style.

Are we surprised by news reports like this? No.

It is usually the most vocal, the most pious, and the most vicious haters who have the most to hide. Need we mention Swaggart, Gingrich, Limbaugh, DeLay, Dobson, Musgrave, and now Ted Haggard?

Howie writes - and speaks - volumes:
I'm going to guess that there are as many gay people in the Democratic Party as there are in the Republican Party. So why do you keep hearing about all these "gay problems" relating to Republicans?

Well, Democrats -- other than reactionary Republicans-in-Democrats'-clothing like Mike Weaver and Harold Ford-- don't define "gay" as an inherent problem.

Republicans do -- even outed ones like Congressman Jim Kolbe (R-AZ).

This morning the Rocky Mountain News is reporting that the president of the National Association of Evangelicals and founder of the New Life mega-Church, Ted Haggard, a major Republican operative in Colorado, a close Bush advisor, a star of the GOP brainwashing film Jesus Camp an obsessed homophobic crusader has been regularly paying a male prostitute to have sex with him.
As if we need to repeat it again: it's not the act, it's the hypocrisy. It's using a position of great power and influence to denigrate those weaker than you who have no voice.

DownWithTyranny and others have done nationally what SquareState and others have tried to do locally: support candidates who will not only change the center of gravity of our government but who will change the power structure of our own party.

Accommodation with Republicans has not worked. What did we get from it? Ask Ken Salazar.

Compromise with fascists is destined to fail: they will give you nothing and make you think it's something, even if it takes a good waterboarding.

The status quo could not stand for the sake of our democracy.

This is a grass-roots, ground-up effort. No one told us what to believe or who to support. No one told us not to raise money, not to do our own campaigns, not to use our own tactics. Though we did: from pure idealism, power, ability, and necessity.

The strength and validity of our positions have been proven time and again in this election cycle. The media, the candidates, and the party operatives have all come to realize what we bring to the table, what we bring to the democratic process. And there is no counter on the Repubilcan side.

I can feel no pity for Pastor Ted - a man who used his position to fleece his flock, who abandoned his Godly principles for wealth and fame, and who had so many opportunities to show compassion yet showed only callousness to those in need.

The day he starts to feed the poor, the day he starts to disavow the warriors, the day he starts to respect our democracy, is the day I feel sorry for the powerful who are brought to their knees by God's mysterious ways.

Until then, we will put in power those who do have compassion, do believe in fairness, and do behold our divine Constituion.

No Hypocrites allowed. Praise Jesus!

Put on your HAZMAT suits, voters!

Sheesh, just think if we weren't running against a Christian, this could really get ugly:
In one of the most acrimonious days of the bitter race to succeed retiring GOP Rep. Joel Hefley, the 5th Congressional District candidates traded accusations and demanded ads and endorsements be pulled.

Democratic Party officials and congressional hopeful Jay Fawcett asked television stations Wednesday to stop airing his opponent’s attack ads. Meanwhile, Doug Lamborn, the Republican candidate, called on Fawcett to renounce an endorsement from Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Fawcett set off the chain of events several days ago by running a television ad saying Lamborn is under investigation for breaking campaign laws. Lamborn responded with an ad saying Fawcett’s commercial was a lie.

Former El Paso County GOP chairman Bob Gardner filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against Lamborn during the six-way Republican primary. It accused the Lamborn campaign of coordinating illegally with two outside groups running ads: the Christian Coalition of Colorado and the Club for Growth.

Gardner, who had supported one of Lamborn’s primary opponents but who now supports Lamborn, asked to withdraw the complaint this week. FEC spokeswoman Kelly Huff said the commission will take the request into consideration but will not automatically dismiss the complaint.

It is unclear if an investigation is under way. FEC procedures require the agency to notify a candidate or committee that an investigation has begun. But Lamborn’s campaign manager, Jon Hotaling, said no notification has been received.
And then there's Lamborn's illegal use of Copyrighted material from Project Vote-Smart's website.

Doug Lamborn is typical of far too many Republicans these days: "you need to follow all the laws, I'll follow the ones I feel like following."

Had enough?

Time for some hard questions - not bad jokes

Apologies demanded, apologies denied

Mr. Bush, you should apologize for making a joke about not finding WMDs, as thousands die in Iraq for your lies.

Mr. Bush, apologize to the families of those lost on September 11th for your abdication of responsibility in the summer of 2001, and specifically for your "you've covered your ass now" response in ignoring the August 6th, 2001 PDB.

Mr. Bush, apologize for letting Osama Bin Laden escape at Tora Bora in December 2001, and for encouraging the Pakistanis to back away from Al Qaeda and the Taliban in September in Waziristan.

Mr. Bush, apologize to our troops in Afghanistan for abandoning the mission in that country to divert resources to Iraq, and for Donald Rumsfeld specifically refusing to provide resources for a heroin eradication program in that country that has led to a flourishing of financing for the Taliban.

Mr. Bush, apologize to our troops for sending them into harm's way through a campaign of lies and public disinformation, and then joking about it as the soldiers died for your mendacity.

Mr. Bush, apologize to our troops for using them in a war that had nothing to do with those who attacked us on 9/11, and for knowing you were lying about this at the time.

Mr. Bush, apologize to the troops for not sending enough of them to secure the country, for providing them with inadequate and substandard equipment, food, and logistical support that has endangered them every day they are there. You should apologize to the troops for not having a Plan B to deal with occupying the country after Donald Rumsfeld didn't get his way by installing Ahmad Chalabi as our toady. While you are at it, apologize to the troops for not securing the weapons caches inside Iraq and for letting thousands of weapons fall into the hands of those who are killing our troops now.

Mr. Bush, apologize to the troops for not changing strategy from "stay the course" when it could have mattered years ago, thereby ensuring that our troops are fighting and dying needlessly for your pigheadedness.

Mr. Bush, apologize to the troops for their inadequate veterans' benefits, why their families have to go on food stamps, why their families have to send them flak jackets, and why you don't attend the funerals of those killed in action.

And while you are at it, you should apologize to the troops for being so cavalier with their lives with the "bring them on", "Mission Accomplished", and other rhetorical nonsense. It sure seems easy for you to question the commitment and patriotism of others when neither you, your five-deferments vice president, your peacetime flight instructor Defense Secretary, and your combat-avoiding press spokesman have ever served their country in combat.

Mr. Bush, someone like you, who DQ'd from being a stateside pilot after running to Alabama to avoid Vietnam is in no position to ask anyone else to apologize to our troops for anything.

A message from John Kerry to the Chickhawks who NEVER SERVED but who never hesitate to use our Troops as Re-election PROPS

Better late than never (link to DailyKos for our chickhawk friends):

"If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I'm sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.

I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq . It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.

The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor.

Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they're afraid to debate real men. And this time it won't work because we're going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq ."

There are now 2,816 dead in the Iraq war.

George Bush has failed in pacifying Baghdad and has given up security checkpoints to find a kidnapped soldier.

And this the 1,276th day since the declaration by our lying president of “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq.

The Evolution of the Modern Republican Party in Colorado Springs

Fascinating:

"From my perspective, the replacement vs. continuity debate that raged through the 1990s is now dead," said the study's American co-author, Erik Trinkaus.

...snip....

"There's not this shining moment where they all disappeared because we ran out of the forest and clubbed them to death," said Laitman, who was not involved in the new study.

...snip....

"When these two populations met, they saw each other as human beings," Trinkaus said. "They blended socially as well as biologically. To me, that tells us a lot about Neanderthals. And if we think that Neanderthals were a lot more primitive than modern humans, then maybe modern humans were a lot more primitive, too."

Oops, they were talking about Neanderthals, not Republicans. My bad.

Fawcett Frags Lamborn

and disposes of the Party for Irresponsibility, Lies and Smears' nominee for the CD-5 seat:

Jay Fawcett took the gloves off in a third and possibly final debate Monday, calling his Republican opponent, Doug Lamborn, a "liar" in their race for retiring GOP Rep. Joel Hefley's 5th Congressional District seat.

"My opponent hides behind his fear, hate and false piety," Fawcett said in closing remarks after a two-hour radio debate with Lamborn. "He's a liar, and he has no plan for what to do in Washington. Some of you have found my comments harsh, but the time for lying in political campaigns is over. "

I wish.

Lamborn's (Long) Sleazy History

Doug Lamborn seems to have a long history of dirty campaign tricks:

[I]t was not the first time Lamborn had been accused of nasty politics.

In May 1998, Lamborn ran against Tom Ratterree for the state Senate. Ratterree claimed in a story printed in The (Colorado Springs) Gazette that he had received copies of a letter circulated by Lamborn supporters suggesting Ratterree, who opposed euthanasia, took his wife off of life support.

His wife died of cancer in 1991 and had requested that she not be connected to life-support machinery.

Ratterree dropped out of the race, telling a Gazette reporter: "....the lack of Christian attitude by some people in the community, I don't need that."

Ratterree died in 2005.

From the Colorado Springs Gazette archives hinted at by the Post article:
In a surprise announcement, Tom Ratterree dropped out of the race for the state Senate Monday, citing health problems and a distaste for the nasty way the campaign against Sen. Doug Lamborn was developing.

Ratterree said Monday he had collected 1,400 signatures - far more than the 1,000 needed to place his name on the Republican ballot in the Aug. 11 primary.

But Ratterree said he was withdrawing anyway.

"I'm dropping out," Ratterree said. "I just decided with (health problems) and the lack of Christian attitude by some people in the community, I don't need that."

Ratterree said he has an ulcer on his foot that has left him with bone-to-bone contact. His doctor has advised him to limit his walking to help the healing process.

Ratterree, a former state representative, had been seeking the District 9 Senate seat in northwest El Paso County - one of the most conservative and most solidly Republican districts in the state.

Lamborn has represented the district since February when he was appointed to replace Charles Duke of Monument, who resigned. Lamborn, a Springs attorney, served two terms in the House.

Ratterree's departure almost assures Lamborn the seat. No other Republican or Democratic candidates have announced campaigns for the seat.

"I was looking forward to a vigorous campaign," Lamborn said Monday. "But I hope Mr. Ratterree can get help with his various problems."

It's the latest in a string of disappointments for Ratterree.

The first was his failure to win appointment to the Duke seat in February.

Then he did not win enough delegate votes at the May 2 Republican Party County Assembly to qualify for the primary.

Then came nasty allegations in the campaign from Lamborn supporters who distributed a letter falsely suggesting Ratterree took his dying wife off life support systems in 1991. Ratterree opposes euthanasia.

Mary Ratterree died in 1991 after a long battle with cancer. At her instruction, she was never placed on life support. Ratterree was with her at the hospital when she died.

The campaign also featured attacks on Lamborn from Ratterree supporters who distributed critical fliers describing Lamborn's efforts to avoid paying court-ordered restitution in 1993 when his now 18-year-old son was convicted in several arson cases.

Lamborn has said that the restitution was his son's responsibility and that paying it would be admitting that he and his wife were bad parents.

After the flier was distributed, Lamborn's son reached a financial settlement with the man who published it. As part of that agreement, the man withdrew the flier.

Lamborn said there never was such a letter: "That would be a very mean thing to say."
Charlie Duke, sheesh, I purged my memory of that right wing freak.

But you gotta love Doug's use of the George Bush/Karl Rove style Deniability™. It's a Republican specialty.

Along with evading responsibility and rationalizing any lie to win public office. Things Doug Lamborn has a long history of doing....
