BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Dozens of people were gunned down by rampaging militia gunmen in a Sunni district of Baghdad on Sunday, police said, in the bloodiest such incident of sectarian violence that has raised fears of civil war.

The shooting began in an area close to a Shiite mosque in mainly Sunni west Baghdad, where a car bomb killed three people late on Saturday. Houses were also burning, police added.

Police and politicians from the once-dominant Sunni Arab minority put Sunday's provisional death toll at at least 40, including women and children, and blamed rogue police commandos and the Mehdi Army militia of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

You can't sugar coat it. You can't blame the media - they are doing their job. You can't possibly think this is progress. BBC Radio's Johnny Diamond called this series of killings "breathtaking".
