Democrats forge alliance with moderate GOP: Extremist right wing vows internecine financial blood bath.
Not sure what this deal on the filibuster means. If Dobson's pissed, it must be somewhat good. Owen will surely get a federal judgeship - this is a woman who took campaign money from Enron, then sat on a case affecting Enron. Gee, I wonder how she ruled? I wonder if she worried about how her obvious conflict of interest would look to the public? Doubtful.
Bottom line: we kicked the can down the road a bit. Frist ain't happy, and as long as he has a vestige of lust for the presidency, he'll keep his finger on the trigger.
The nuclear option is dead! Long live the nuclear option!

While compromise may look nice, I still can't help but be bothered that the Democrats compromised out of an absolute right position. They were fully within their power to use the filibuster on judges and by compromising it is as if they admit there is something problematic with what they were doing.
It is as if the Republicans said, give us what we want or we will blow up the Senate (figeratively) and the Democrats struck a deal with them. The Republicans were common terrorists in this and the Democrats made the mistake of negotiating with terrorists.
I'd have to agree, the GOPAbsolutists would never have done what we just did. But then, the fact that they are absolutists with no interest in compromise or anyone else's point of view is what turns so many people off about them. You can't play fair with them, because they will never play fair with you - when weak they will scream for some advantage ("I'm a poor oppressed fundamentalist! Respect my civil rights!"), and when strong, they will never give the same kind of quarter they requested ("Civil rights, schmights, you bunch of losers, we're talking Absolute Truth here, not reality!").
